Magome-juku

Magome-juku

Magome used to prosper as a post-station town in the difficult mountain pass of Nakasendo, located on the southernmost road of Kisoji. Low roof lattice houses stand along a 600 meter stone pavement slope which remains the same as in the old days of the post-station. Although many of the houses from Edo period burned down in a big fire in 1895, they were restored to their original standing by the townsfolks' effort. Magome is known as the hometown of the famous writer Shimazaki Toson, and was the basis of his famous novel "Yoakemae" (Before the Dawn).
